The Benefits of Small Class Sizes
At Olivet School, we are very proud of the small class sizes we offer our students—and when we say small, we truly mean it. Currently, our classrooms average approximately eight students per class, allowing us to provide an educational experience that is both personal and highly effective.
Individual Attention That Makes a Difference
Small class sizes give each student the vital one-on-one attention they need to truly excel in foundational academic skills. These early concepts lay the educational foundations for future learning and long-term success. With fewer students in each classroom, teachers can quickly identify strengths and areas for growth and respond with targeted instruction.
In addition to individualized classroom support, our students participate in both provincially and federally recognized assessments. Reading comprehension is assessed at the Senior Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 levels, while students in Grades 2–5 complete the Canadian Achievement Tests at the end of the school year. These measures consistently show that our students perform at or above grade level and, importantly, are not at risk of falling behind.
A School Where Every Child is Known
At Olivet School, small class sizes mean that teachers and staff truly know each student as an individual. When you drop off your child in the morning, they are greeted by name—whether or not the staff member on duty is their classroom teacher. This personal connection helps set a warm, caring tone that carries through the entire day and supports students’ emotional well-being alongside their academic growth.
Teaching Tailored to Each Learner
Because our teachers know their students so well, instruction is never one-size-fits-all. Teachers understand each child’s unique strengths and challenges and can adjust their teaching accordingly. They can move quickly through material that students grasp easily, while slowing down to review and reinforce concepts that may require more time.
If an individual student is struggling, our small class environment allows teachers the time and energy to provide extra support—whether through one-on-one instruction, small-group work, or additional materials sent home to reinforce learning.
Meaningful Learning in the Upper Grades
In the older grades, small class sizes create a more mature and engaging learning environment. Students participate in teacher-led discussions, learn from one another’s perspectives, and develop important communication skills. These discussions encourage critical thinking and help students learn how to share ideas respectfully and thoughtfully in an educational setting.
A Strong Foundation for Future Success
Overall, our small class sizes allow Olivet School students to graduate with the solid academic, social, and emotional foundation they need to succeed in their next school and beyond. By combining individualized attention, strong assessment practices, and a caring school community, we are confident that our students are well prepared for the future.
